The city has more than 20 museums celebrating its culture and past. Weimar was home to Goethe, one of Germany's most important writers. Visit Goethe's house, where he lived for nearly 50 years. Or visit Goethe's summer house, where he created some of his most famous poems.
Those interested in the history of the area can find out more at the Weimar House, a multimedia adventure museum that depicts five millennia of history of the area or the Weimar Town Museum, which traces the city's history since 1919. The Weimar Park Caves, originally designed to store beer but expanded during World War II and used as an air raid shelter, offer a unique picture of the area.
Weimar is home to some magnificent palaces. Visit the Belvedere Palace and see historic rooms and an interesting collection of artifacts. The Tiefurt Palace and Ettersburgh Palace give a picture of life in the 1800's. In the city center you will find the Town Castle, the former residence palace, is home to a valuable art collection.
Weimar is famous for its association with the Bauhaus which opened in 1919 and was later closed down by the National Socialists. The City has an excellent selection of restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines. Try Thueringer Bratwurst at one of the sausage stalls in the market square or Zupfkuchen, a local cake.
If you are visiting in the fall, watch out for the Onion Market which takes place in October. This festival is held over 3 days, with some 500 stalls and over 100 performances taking place in the City.
With its interesting heritage and excellent hotels Weimar also makes a good base for exploring the wider area. The infamous Nazi concentration camp, Buchenwald, is only 6 miles to the north. Here you will find a memorial complex and exhibitions dedicated to those who were imprisoned here. Head to Halle to see Handel's birthplace or Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, to see some beautiful old buildings and parks.
